Stone Deck Installation & Design in Central Pennsylvania

A Surface That Improves With Age

Natural stone on a raised deck holds up differently than composite decking does. It doesn’t fade in direct sun. It stays cooler underfoot on a July afternoon. After a decade of Pennsylvania winters, the surface is still sharp.

Your deck gets used year-round. The surface should hold up to it.

A Plus Landscaping has designed and built outdoor spaces across Central Pennsylvania since 2006. We’re family-owned, based in Reinholds, and we handle every project from the first site visit through final installation.

What a Stone Deck Is

A stone deck uses natural stone or concrete pavers as the walking surface on a raised deck frame. The underlying structure, built like a standard wood or composite deck, consists of posts, beams, and joists. What goes on top is stone rather than composite boards or Trex.

Stone brings natural color variation and texture that composite materials can’t replicate. It suits projects where the visual character of the surface matters: paired with a natural stone patio at grade, set against a stone facade, or as part of a larger hardscape design across the property.

What to Expect from the Surface

Natural stone doesn’t trap heat the way composite or darker synthetic materials do. On a hot summer afternoon, the surface stays cooler underfoot than you’d expect from an elevated deck.

It doesn’t fade, either. Composite surfaces hold their color early on but show wear over time, particularly in direct sun. Natural stone ages differently. The surface stays dense and consistent year after year.

Maintenance is minimal. There’s no re-staining, no board replacement, and no refinishing schedule. Stone requires occasional cleaning, but it doesn’t carry the upkeep cycle that wood does or the replacement questions that composite eventually raises.

For decks with steps and pillars, the stone surface can run continuously through the step material, creating a consistent look throughout the structure.

From Consultation to Completion

Every project starts with a site visit. A Design Professional comes to your property, looks at the existing structure or planned deck footprint, and talks through what you’re trying to build. No commitments at that point. Just an accurate picture of what the work involves and what it would cost.

For larger stone deck projects, we produce 3D renderings before construction begins. You’ll see how the surface connects to the rest of your outdoor living space, where the transitions land, and how the finished deck will look.

Once you approve the design, our certified crew handles the installation. The same company that designed your deck builds it.

We work with homeowners in Lancaster, Harrisburg, Hershey, Mechanicsburg, Middletown, and Reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a stone deck?

A stone deck is a raised deck structure with natural stone as the walking surface, rather than composite boards or Trex. The frame is built like a standard deck. The difference is the surface material. It’s a less common option than composite but offers different performance properties, particularly around heat retention and long-term durability.

Natural stone or concrete paver materials for elevated deck applications are selected based on weight tolerance and drainage characteristics specific to the deck’s structure. A Plus reviews these factors during the consultation and site visit before recommending a material.

Natural stone is one of the most durable surfaces available for outdoor use. With proper base preparation and installation, a stone deck can last several decades. The quality of the underlying structure, the stone selected, and basic maintenance over time are the main factors in longevity.

Cost varies based on deck size, surface area, material selection, and whether the project involves new construction or the replacement of an existing deck surface. A site visit and a formal proposal are the most reliable ways to obtain an accurate estimate for your project. A Plus offers free estimates across Central Pennsylvania.
